The Special Mental Health Initiatives Division, with Bonlitha Windham as Division Director, administers the Community Alternatives to Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities Grant and 1915(c) Waiver, or MYPAC (Mississippi Youth Programs Around-the-Clock). The Mental Health Services Division, with Charlene Toten as Division Director, oversees the following programs:
  • Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities
  • Acute Freestanding Psychiatric Facilities
  • Psychiatric Units at General Hospitals
  • In-Patient Detox for Chemical Dependency
  • Out-patient hospital services
  • Community Mental Health Centers
  • Expanded EPSDT
  • Psychiatry services by physician or nurse practitioner
  • Mental Health Services by Federally Qualified Health Centers
  • Mental Health Services by Rural Health Clinics and
  • Pre-Admission Screening and Resident Review
  • Intellectual Disabilities / Developmental Disabilities

The Bureau’s programs provide a way for people to get the mental health treatment they need in a variety of settings, depending on age and conditions. Several of our programs, however, are limited to children under age 21. Some services are not covered, while others may require a specific diagnosis to be covered. Some of the services require prior authorization for coverage.

Our Vision is a transformed Community focused on individuals receiving quality, innovative, and cost-effective mental health services.

We aim to accomplish our vision with the following Values:
We serve as the state’s change agent to improve mental health services through quality assurance, timely response, proactive program development and improvement.

We work in a collaborative manner with federal and state agencies, providers and mental health advocates.

We will be committed to each other as a team and to the people we serve.

We will treat others with respect.

We will continue to expand and to share our knowledge.

We will strive to increase and to demonstrate professionalism.

We will demonstrate loyalty to the team and the mission through our words and actions.
